The Artists

Arlene Rambush

Artist’s Statement

Currently, my work is mostly abstract. I seek to break down the ordinary appearance of everyday experience into elementary building blocks of existence. Through geometrical and translucent representation, I seek to transcend the obvious appearance whether it is an object or feeling, or state of mind. I view the universe as holographic: what is apparent on a macro level is also present in the micro and vice versa. The “difference” we entertain occurs because of our human perception, how our brains organize data. Additionally, we are part of the experience and can’t get outside to peer in. “All of art is learning to see” but, for me, not so much seeing what is “out there” as seeing what we create “in here.”

Artist’s Biography

My professional background was teaching college-level humanities: English, Theater, and Philosophy. In the Theater experience, I focused on set design and construction as well as directing. My main area of interest in Philosophy was Aesthetics and the relationship of one art to another and the similarity of principles of beauty in all of them whether visual arts, music, dance, sculpture. My literary focus was poetry which is all metaphor, one thing standing for another. My interest in all of the arts led me to serve on the Board of SVAN for 8 years. My interest in education has led me to serve on the Northville Board of Education. My creative endeavors began with poetry, music, and work with fiber --sewing and knitting, then hand spinning and handwaving, and, finally, painting. I have been painting for about ten years but long before taking up painting, I was fascinated with the play of color and design in nature and textiles. My work as a handweaver involves the same playing with color and design as my painting and I find that weaving and painting make a very happy marriage.
